<17:38 EEST> Tänään olen jälleen kerran herännyt aikaisin -- itse asiassa liian aikaisin, koska päättäjät ovat päättäneet, että kansa on liian tyhmää muokatakseen itse omia aikataulujaan, joten sen sijaan on kajottu itse aikaan, eikä kellon näyttämällä ole enää mitään yhteyttä auringon asemaan. Kävellyt tuulessa ja tuiskussa töihin istumaan tietokoneella, minkä voisin yhtä hyvin tehdä kotonakin. Usein vieläpä paremmin, kun ketään ei olisi häiritsemässä.

Työmatkarutiineihini kuuluu varsinkin näin keväällä, että muutamia kertoja pysähdyn kopistamaan kiviä kengistä. Keväällä sitä aina havahdutaan ihmeelliseen tosiasiaan siitä, miten paljon kivitavaraa talven aikana maagisesti kertyy kevyen liikenteen väylille. Harvoilla talvikeleillä on mielestäni suoranaista hyötyä hiekoituksesta. Kumma juttu, että autoilijat käyttävät kiltisti talvirenkaita, mutta kevyemmin liikkuville on ainoa vaihtoehto syytää aina uutta sepeliä uuden lumen päälle. Keväisten kenkien ja keuhkojen iloksi. Vaikka kyllähän tieliikennekin niitä hiukkaspäästöjä tuottaa pelkästään renkaista ja asfaltistakin.

<19:02 EEST> Jatkoa edelliseen näppäimistöä parantavan bootin jälkeen; Linux-kernelin boottiparametri i8042.nopnp auttaa toisinaan sekoilevaan näppäimistöön, mutta ei aina, riippuen ilmeisesti kernelin ja udev:in versiosta sekä auringonpilkkujen tiheydestä.

Edellisestä saattaa tulla helposti sellainen kuva, että valitan turhaan pikkuasioista, varsinkin kun nykyisessä taloustilanteessa pitäisi olla erityisen etuoikeutettu saatuaan hieman vakituisempia töitä. Taloustilanteesta riippumatta olen usein mielelläni kysynyt, työskentelemmekö elääksemme vai toisinpäin. Kun olen siirtynyt pätkätöistä kaukosuhteeseen, kahden asunnon ylläpitoon sekä jatkuvaan matkusteluun, ei kuukaudessa ole jäänyt käteen juurikaan enempää. Vapaa-aikaa ja hermoja on tosin kulunut koko rahan edestä.

Pikkuasioista taas voidaan mainita vesikidutus, mitä muuten tapahtui tänäänkin aivan kirjaimellisesti, koska tännekin rantautui se säälittävä sumu, joka ei osaa päättää sataako vai ei. Kiusoittelee ottamaan sateenvarjon esiin, vetäytyy hetkeksi, ja sitten taas heittää roiskeet päin pahaa-aavistamatonta pläsiä. Emme ole sokerista tehtyjä, mutta pienet, toistuvat ärsykkeet joka arkipäivä tuovat lopulta pohjan esiin siitä kuuluisasta miunki säkistä.

Kellojen siirto se vasta mielenkiintoinen vesikidutuksen muoto onkin. Viimevuotiset tutkimustiedot, joista olen koettanut kerätä jonkinlaista listaa, puhuvat kiistattomasti kesäaikarumban haittapuolista. Ilmiö ei kuitenkaan liene niin suuri ongelma, että siitä olisi tarvetta keskustella valtakunnan tasolla, vaan kaikki argumentit jäävät piiloon nettipalstoille, joilla ne tietenkin kuitataan turhana whinetyksenä ;)

Ongelman metaongelmana voisi olla vaikkapa se, ettei kyseessä ole esim. ihmisoikeusrikkomus, josta löytyisi sortava ja sorrettava osapuoli. Kun kaikki kärsimme yhdessä kahdesti vuodessa, on se vain ihanan sosiaalista ja yhdistävää. Ilmiö rinnastuu täydellisesti uskontojen ja vastaavien yhteisöjen rituaaleihin. Tällaiset ovat mukavia silloin, kun on itse vapaaehtoisesti päättänyt omaksua yhteisön tavat. Mutta vapaaehtoinen uskontokuntaan liittyminen tässä maassa onkin sitten jo toinen tarina :-/

<17:54 EEST> In the past few days I've set up a new server, based on the ARM architecture, or as we say in Kuopio, käsj. There have been some issues trying to update packages, but mostly things are running fine, including the latest Linux kernel (though of course, 2.6.29 was released just the next day).

More than a year ago, I considered replacing my aging media center with a tiny server, and using my laptop for playing the stuff. Instead, I opted to update the other machine, and keep the laptop ready for mobile use. However, in my Kuopio residence the idea of laptop + server has turned out viable, and for some time I used gaga as the server, noisy though it is. Then one day I noticed a very nice deal for the Linkstation Live on Huuto.net, closing one circle of ideas.

<21:50 EEST> A couple of more interesting technical issues from today: this morning I managed to shut down my laptop with a spark of static electricity. It had happened before about a month ago, and never before that. In fact, in this apartment I have experienced a generally higher incidence of static, and I believe it is due to an air bed. I mostly use it as a couch, so it gets rubbed by clothes, and it is pretty well insulated.

Now the actually worrying bit is, why are electronics so sensitive? I think the lack of grounding in most modern gadgets plays a part. Though grounding comes with its own set of problems, particularly in audio equipment where they participate in ground loops. In some ways the lack of grounding seems to reflect the general level of flimsiness in consumer electronics. As a nice throwback to good old times, though, the Linkstation Live has a ground binding post.

So Linux 2.6.29 was released soon after I had finished compiling and booting 2.6.28.8 on kasj. I have naturally updated both this laptop and the one at work, and played around with the great promise of kernel modesetting. It should speed up graphics on Intel systems, with others to follow. Not surprisingly, this first public iteration did not quite work, but fortunately it could be toggled via a single module parameter.

However, many sources report that the new kernel makes a system faster overall. I usually find such news hard to believe, given that the kernel never takes much CPU power, and the usual bits of memory management etc. are already quite mature. But today I was pleasantly surprised as I could smoothly play some 720p H.264 videos that were pretty much unwatchable before. MPlayer, X and other factors have been unchanged during the past few days, so it must be the kernel.

Funnily enough, HD video playback on this laptop had until now been limited by the graphics drivers. Many videos became playable after software downscaling, which should take up somewhat more CPU power, so apparently there was a bottleneck somewhere in the Xvideo pathway. Now that issue seems to be gone, even without the new modesetting :)

<11:02 EEST> Many musicians say they try to make the kind of music they like listening to themselves. I don't usually identify with this, which probably indicates a lack of real musicianship ;) However, there are further explanations. While in scientific endeavours it is good practice to follow what's hot in your field, I don't find it as essential in arts. If I'm in the middle of a bigger creative project, I don't want my ideas contaminated by external influences. Also, my joy of listening to music (as well as my hearing) is being chipped away by the mind-numbing noise that is played in public spaces, with most people not really listening to it, for example most radio channels.

Therefore I find it surprising when, every now and then, I'm excited about a particular record or song, and find myself listening to it every day for some time. More surprisingly, in the past couple of weeks it has been The Whole-Tone Hog from Shit Breaks. I'm attending a course that involves rather intense programming in Fortran, and I've found this track just perfect during coding breaks. (I'm practically unable to write anything serious while there's music or chatter around, but for thinking about the code, this sort of music can be refreshing.)

There are a number of songs that I've come to strongly associate with certain moods, and I guess many people have this kind of 'soundtrack of their lives'. The WTH has now become one of the very few 'intellectual themes' for me. What's not surprising is that I originally wrote it as the philosopher's theme in Paska kaparee. Shit, it still works!

<23:48 EEST> In the obvious follow-up to the previous post on filesystems, I today converted the root filesystem on my laptop to Ext4. This second rerooting was pretty smooth as I'd left myself all the essential documentation from last time's quirks. The only slight speed bump was due to my lack of preparation in that I didn't yet have an Ext4-capable kernel, so I made an Ext3 and converted after populating the fs.
